President's Message

Hello dear members and friends.
Now is the time of year to think about warm weather, flowers and blossoms, and on summer evenings at the ’The Lake’. I certainly do that. But occasionally my thoughts are still back in winter, especially the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I was there with family and attended one, two events myself. Canada spent a lot of money, but all in all I think it was well spent. First of all we showed the world that Canada can host a major international sporting event, and secondly that Canada’s athletes can win many many medals against world wide competition. German was also officially spoken there, since  alpine countries like Germany, Austria and Switzerland speak German and have top notch athletes in winter sports. And Vancouver has at least one Deutsches Haus, the Vancouver Alpen Club, (please see our webside for more details). It is a large and modern building, that we visited during the Canada-Germany hockey game. During the game followed on a large TV screen, we ate a tasty Schnitzel and drank a large beer. Sounds like the German Society in Winnipeg, exactly.

But one can’t just think about one’s stomach, but also offer something to the brain and heart. The Mennonite Theatre did that and as we can read here a little later about 400 people had an entertaining evening. Perhaps we will see each other there the next time.

The Congress, thanks to your memberships and donations, can support the German language and culture, for example language schools and choirs and theatre. In our opinion that is a worthwhile cause and the Board and I thank you for your support.

Nachrichten vom Präsident

Hallo liebe Mitglieder und Freunde,
Jetzt ist die Jahreszeit angebrochen um an warmes Wetter, Blumen und Blüten und an Sommerabende am ’The Lake’ zu denken. Ich mache das auf jeden fall. Aber manchmal sind meine Gedanken doch noch im Winter, besonders die Olympischen Winterspiele in Vancouver. Ich war mit meiner Familie Vorort und habe mir zwei Veranstaltungen angeguckt. Kanada hat viel Geld investiert, aber alles im allen, denke ich war es eine gute Sache für Kanada. Wir haben der Welt gezeigt, dass Kanada ein großartiger Gastgeber für ein bedeutendes internationales Sportereignis sein kann, und zweitens das Kanadische Sportler viele viele Medaillen gegen die weltweite Konkurrenz gewinnen können. Die Deutsche Sprache hörte man viel in Vancouver, da Alpenländer wie Deutschland, Ősterreich und die Schweiz doch Deutsch sprechen und sehr gute Sportler haben. Und in Vancouver gibt es mindestens ein Deutsches Haus, der Vancouver Alpen Club (siehe bitte unsere Webseite). Es ist ein groβes und modernes Gebäude, welches wir besuchten um uns das Kanada-Deutschland Eishockeyspieles anzusehen. Während wir das Spiel auf einen groβen Bildschirm verfolgten, aβen wir ein schmackhaftes Schnitzel und tranken ein groβes Bier. Hört sich doch an wie das Deutsche Haus hier in Winnipeg, oder?

Man darf aber nicht nur an den Magen denken, sondern muss auch etwas dem Kopfe und Herzen anbieten. Das Mennonitische Theater tat das und wie wir hier später lesen können, hatten ungefähr 400 Leuten einen unterhaltsamen Abend. Vielleicht sehen wir uns dort das nächste Mal. 

Der Kongress, dankt euren Mitgliedsbeiträgen und Spenden, und kann damit die Deutsche Sprache und Kultur, zum Beispiel in Sprachschulen, Chören und Theatern, unterstützen. Wir sind der Meinung, dass ist gut angelegtes Geld und der Vorstand und ich danken Ihnen für Ihre Unterstützung.
